Omega-3 Plus Ratios Test
Understanding the Omega-3 Plus Ratios test
An extended panel that includes everything in the Omega-3 Index plus critical inflammatory ratios. Assess your patients' fatty acid balance with the Omega-6:Omega-3 ratio, AA:EPA ratio, and Trans Fat Index — all from a single finger-prick blood spot or liquid blood sample.
What is the Omega-3 Plus Ratios Test?
The Omega-3 Plus Ratios Test is a more comprehensive fatty acid test than the Omega-3 Index. It measures EPA and DHA, while also looking at their balance with omega-6 fatty acids and trans fats to provide a clearer picture of inflammation and overall fatty acid balance.
It is useful for patients with inflammatory conditions, those taking omega-3 supplements, or those making dietary changes.
The test can be done using a dried blood spot (DBS) collected by a simple finger prick, or a liquid blood sample. DBS samples are stable at room temperature and can be conveniently mailed to the laboratory.
What Does It Measure?
Omega-3 Plus Ratios Panel measures four important markers of fatty acid balance:
- Omega-3 Index (EPA + DHA% of total RBC fatty acids)
- Omega-6:Omega-3 Ratio - Total omega-6 to total omega-3
- AA:EPA Ratio (Arachidonic Acid to Eicosapentaenoic Acid)
- Trans Fat Index (Industrial trans fatty acid content)
